This is a story that rings true for many South Africans today who are still
trying to find their feet in the ‘New South Africa’. Although they have come
home, they must still adjust to life as ordinary citizens.
Homecoming is a story of three former Umkhonto We Sizwe guerrillas’. Thabo,
Charlie and Peter, recently returned to South Africa after more than a decade’s
absence in exile. The three friends are trying to settle back into civilian
life. The back drop to our story is the new South Africa, a very complex,
exciting and dynamic place.
This intriguing story was written by Zola Maseko and was being produced by
Dumisani Dlamini at the time of his untimely passing. This duo dreamt of seeing
Homecoming screened and SABC 2 is proud to finally have Homecoming grace its
screens. Homecoming is a human drama depicting reality. This is a story of how,
men who had been conditioned to behave in a certain way had to be re-integrated
into society. The story of Thabo, Charlie and Peter.
Thabo, Charlie and Peter have a long history together. Boyhood friends from
Meadowlands, Soweto, they were driven into exile after the 1976 Soweto student
uprising. Many years have been spent in training camps in Angola and on combat
missions into South Africa. Upon their return, they discover, both on a personal
and political level, that there are many momentous obstacles to overcome before
they achieve their aspirations. The present is difficult enough. It is the
secrets of the past that return to haunt them and threaten the very foundation
of their friendship.
Thabo returns to his beloved Grandmother, the woman who raised him. He is
anxious to rejoin his childhood sweetheart, Thandi, and meet his eight year old
son, Lizo, conceived on one of his secret missions and whom he has never seen.
Charlie harbours a dark terrible. It is eating him up. He has moments of
reckless instability and he promises his friends to sort himself out, seeking
help if necessary. But, the pull of the good life is too much for him to bear.
Peter has a nose for politics in all its shades. He is determined to carve a
niche for himself in the new government. Carefully and with great skill he lands
a top job in the security services.
