The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa is proud to present this
award to 50/50 in recognition of the significant contribution the programme has
made over the past 20 years.
We celebrate the fact that the programme is one of the longest running wildlife
documentary series in the world. Through 50/50, conservation issues have been
brought into the homes of millions of South Africans, educating them, informing
them and encouraging them to action.
Congratulations to the 50/50 team who were honoured with a President’s special
award by The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA). The world
over, 50/50 is the longest running conservation programme, asking and answering
questions about science, nature and the environment all in an effort to educate
people on how their actions affect their environment and what they can do to
conserve it.
Alison Kelly, the National Marketing Manager of WESSA, says they award
individuals or groups that make a significant contribution to conservation in
South Africa. But that the award bestowed on 50/50 was extra special, “We very
seldom re-award a person or group, but 50/50 has received two WESSA awards, the
first one in 1988.This award recognises the fact that this programme has gone on
for 20 years and done a great job. The board was unanimous in giving the award
to 50/50."
Danie van der Walt, who has been with 50/50 since its creation to the present,
says this award honours the whole team, “It's great that an important
organisation like The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA)
recognises our efforts. This is a team effort; it is not just about the 50/50
production team, but also about the people who allow us to tell their stories.
There are some horrid stories about South Africa, and it's great to be able to
tell some good ones as well through 50/50. Its achievements all round, for the
SABC, for SABC 2 and for 50/50."
Congratulations to the 50/50 team and we wish them many more years of quality
broadcasting.
